Meeting about grades
Final grades should be posted by the end of the day on 5/19. Many people have emailed me wanting to discuss their final grade. Your grade is based solely on your performance in the class on the quizzes, exams, and final (plus any extra credit assignments you choose to do). The only issue is whether or not I have your scores correclty recorded.
Questions about final
I will be reviewing the final to see if there are any questions that need to be dropped. Then I will work on assigning final grades. Emails related to questions about curves and/or the difficulty of the final will not recieve a response until these issues are settled.
Equation Sheet
A draft of the equation sheet for the exam is here. It is still missing the Nerst equation. Also everyone should remember that ΔG = ΔH - TΔS. Not only for this exam, but for the rest of your lives.
Review notes
The notes from Dr. VDB's Final Exam review are here. If there are topics that are not specifically addressed, do not simply ignore them and assume the review notes cover all possible questions. This is merely meant as another study tool.
New question #15
This question will now be about relating ΔG and K. Not about the temperature dependence of K. You should now how to find ΔG from ΔH and ΔS and how to convert between &DeltaG; and K. The same is true for the electrochemistry question on the relationship between E, ΔG and K.
Fina Exam
The final exam is Saturday May 16th from 2-5 PM.
Here are the details
1. Bring a calculator
2. Bring a pencil to write with
3. Bring your ID to prove who you are
4. Go to the correct room
If your last name starts with A-L your exam is in WEL 2.224
If your last name starts with M-Z your exam is in WEL 1.308
When you get your exam make sure it says "Vanden Bout" at the top.
You will need nothing else at your seat but your pencil and calculator.
Everything else (periodic table, formula sheet, answer sheet, exam, scratch paper...)
will be provided for you.
The exam will go from 2-5. It is 60 questions long. Pace yourself. Make sure
you leave yourself ample time to work all the problems. You cannot have
extra time beyond 5 PM.
You should put your version number on your exam. There is very little time between
when we take the exam and when the final grades for the class are due. This makes it
harder to resolve any exam problems. If there is a
problem and you cannot produce you original exam, you will get a zero.

Final Exemption
As stated in the syllabus if you have 90% of the points before the final exam then you get an "A" for the semester and are exempt from taking the final. We have had 700 total points up to know. Quiz (160) and Exams (540). You final average has whatever extra credit you completed added onto your percentage out of the 700 total points. If you are exempt you should have received an email stating that. If you did not get an email then you are not exempt. If you still have an extra credit or iclicker issue that is outstanding then there is a chance you could be exempt.
Office Hours and Review from TA
Katie Clark will have an office hour on Monday 5/12 in Cubicle A from 5-6 PM. Travis Johnson will be having a question and answer time on Wed 5/13 from 8-10 in WEL 1.308.
Final Review
I will have office hours during which I will review for the final exam on Tuesday May 12, 2009 from 3-4:30 in WEL 2.224 (that is our classroom).
Exemptions
Do not email me to see if you are exempt from the final. I will finalize the numbers on Monday by 5PM and contact you if you are exempt.
eGradebook
Extra Credit and iClicker scores are posted on eGradebook. Your iClicker grade
was calculated as follows. We had a total of 26 days with iClicker questions. If
you were in class and tried to answer at least half the questions that day, then you
got credit for the day. As we had a few days at the beginning of the class I only
counted the classes after the first week. That is 24 total points. Then if you had
at least 75% of these days you got a perfect score. Others were scaled appropriately.
If you have a zero either you never came to class, didn't have an iClicker, or you
never bothered to register it despite my repeated pleas. You can email Dr. Vanden Bout
and he will try to fix it, but realize that at this point you have generated the problem
so I will not be able to fix it immediately.
The extra credit as also now posted. If you don't have a score for an assignment you did,
then again you can contact me. It is likley that your email did not include your EID or
that it had the wrong subject line. I will deal with fixing these as I have time.
